Workshop in the Woods for Moss Enthusiasts

Hands-on observation provides an intimate knowledge of moss and how to grow it

This workshop is for:

  • Home gardeners
  • Moss enthusiasts
  • Students and Educators
  • Media and garden writers
  • Garden center and nursery owners

On Sunday, May 20th, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., spend a day in the woods with us observing mosses in their natural habitats. Join the staff of Moss Acres and special guest "Moss Guru" Rick Smith for an informative, fun, and visually soothing experience in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. A catered lunch by the highly acclaimed Settler's Inn is included.

Hands-on activities throughout the day include:

  • Rehydrating dormant mosses to see how they respond to moisture and to understand the importance of water to mosses.
  • Viewing the various reproductive structures and methods mosses use to grow and spread.
  • Using a hand lens under the guidance of a bryologist to see leaf and stem structure and understand the implications that small size imposes on mosses.
  • Hiking to a picturesque water fall and stream, observing companion plants, and learning about the common, historical, medicinal and commercial uses of moss.
  • Visiting a moss green roof to learn the benefits of green roofs and why moss is an ideal green roof vegetation.
  • Designing and installing a moss garden using four types of shade-loving mosses. Watering the garden to learn the imperative that moisture plays immediately following transplanting.

Workshop participants will enjoy a catered lunch in a shaded, mossy area.

All attendees will receive the most current version of the “Creating Landscapes with Moss” workshop guidebook, a small, moss sampler pack, a Moss Milkshake, and a signed copy of Dr. Robin Kimmerer’s book, Gathering Moss. (A $65 value.)

Here are just a few of the many things the workshop will be covering:

  • The moss plant (moss culture)
  • Moss identification in various habitats
  • Transplanting moss and inoculating moss onto substrates and aggregates
  • Maintaining moss once established
  • Environmental benefits of moss
  • Sustainability of moss

Learning outcomes include the knowledge of basic moss botany, and an understanding of moisture, shade and substrate requirements and that these are of primary importance. Participants will also gain an understanding of how mosses reproduce and spread (which is related to moisture), and a knowledge of inoculation, fragmentation, and other propagation procedures. Participants will learn how to transplant mosses onto soil. As important, participants will leave knowing about the many environmental benefits of moss, and with a heightened awareness and understanding of sustainable practices of moss gathering and use.
