Green Roof

Green RoofAre you looking for a way to conserve our natural resources, save money, protect our environment, and still catch the public eye? Moss Acres has the solution for the "eco-friendly" home owner with our new green roof. A green roof is a system of using earth friendly mosses as the roof cover to your home, instead of traditional less environmentally safe materials like shingles to reduce your carbon footprint in our ecosystem. A green roof can be a beautiful addition to your home. The soothing look of growing moss is refreshing and lends a nice atmosphere to any area.

The moss based, green roof system is light weight, and requires very little care. All that it needs to thrive is soil, moisture, and shade. Moss has been used for years, for gardening projects where green plants are needed, in areas where many plants will not grow, and can stand extreme temperatures. When growing conditions become difficult for the plant, it simply goes dormant, and then when the next rain comes, it will revive and bring back its natural green coloring. It can remain its brilliant green color even in extremely hot or cold temperatures. Once established, your green roof will need very little upkeep. Since moss is quick growing, it only takes about two to four months for your green roof to flourish and stabilize.

Moss is lightweight, and will absorb up to ten times its weight in moisture. The green roof requires only a small amount of soil in which to grow, and is fast growing. To set up your green roof, you just install a waterproofing membrane on top of your house or building, and place a small amount of soil inside; it will only take about 1 1/2 - 2 inches. After this you simply spread fragments of the moss, covering 25% of the roofs surface. There are water retention gel granules which must be applied to the area, as well. Water the moss lightly two or three times a day, for a week, then you won’t have to water it anymore after that. The green roof can survive a draught if necessary, because it will absorb ten times its own weight in water. But not to worry, Moss Acres has researched whether or not the excess weight would damage your home, and concluded that a roof that could support a heavy snow storm will have no problem supporting a green roof.
